So What’s It Like To Work At A Marketing Agency?

Whether you’re a marketing major fresh out of college looking for a job or you’re making a career change to marketing for the first time, there are a million marketing opportunities out there. Have you considered working at a marketing agency? Read on to find out what that might look like.

It’s important to note that there are many different kinds of agencies––digital, advertising, marketing, design, etc. Some are full-service where they offer almost everything and some are specialty that focus on a specific area such as social media or SEO. My experience has been at a digital marketing agency working with a smaller, tight-knit team.

Pace Of Work

When you work at a marketing agency, everything is fast-paced with constant moving parts and strict deadlines. Sometimes you work long hours, but the right person will find that the day flew by and didn’t even notice. We love the work we do and are energized and excited about the fast pace.

Learning Opportunities

In this environment, I interact with and learn from industry experts on a daily basis. It’s a place where you’ll be able to learn the ins and outs of many different industries using different marketing concepts, avenues, and deliverables.

Passionate Team

It’s awesome to be in a space where everyone is passionate about their work. We’re all hard workers and we work really well together. Culture is a huge thing when it comes to hiring at an agency. No matter how smart or talented you are, if you don’t fit with the team, it may not work out.

There are usually areas of flexibility when working at a marketing agency, such as no strict dress codes or vacation policies. It’s more of a culture where you know what work you have to get done, you know how to be presentable when clients are coming in to the office, and so on.

Variety Of Work

As mentioned previously, there’s an opportunity to learn from a wide range of different industries from working at an agency. Each client will have different goals and strategies, which means you could be doing a lots of different things where no day is the same as the next.

My position had an open job description where I’ve been able to learn insanely fast and have gained more responsibility each day. I’ve gone from uploading blog posts to helping design websites. Each one of our team members is trained and given experience in every aspect of the business. This allows us to become a jack of all trades and jump in wherever and whenever into a project.

This is just one look at an agency, the next person you ask might have a totally different experience. Every agency will vary in their culture, their services, types of positions, etc.

So far I have loved working at an agency because of the fast-paced nature and the endless opportunity to learn a wide variety of new things every day.

So what do you think, interested in working at a marketing agency? If you already have, what was your experience like?

  1. Thanks for this article! I’m applying for some marketing communication internships for the summer. I’m not sure if I would rather work at an agency or for one company. It gave me some helpful things to think about!
